Does PLAUD Need a Subscription? 2026 Plan Math, No Hype
PLAUD's own FAQ says no. We verified the tiers, priced the monthly-billing trap at $115.89/year, and drew the line where free stops being enough.

The short answer
No — every PLAUD works forever on 300 free minutes a month. The real question is whether you’ll outgrow them
Answer: no subscription is required. Every PLAUD device includes the free Starter plan — 300 transcription minutes per month, indefinitely, with AI summaries [SPEC, verified Oct 31 2026]. Paid tiers exist and are genuinely useful at volume: Pro is $8.33/month billed annually ($99.99/yr) or $17.99 paid monthly for 1,200 minutes; Unlimited is $19.99/month billed annually ($239.99/yr) or $29.99 monthly. The trap to know: monthly billing costs 2.2× the annual rate. And if you would rather not pay anyone a monthly fee at all, our no-subscription guide covers the hardware-first alternatives.

PLAUD’s current plan structure (read from the company’s own pricing page and membership FAQ on October 31, 2026):
| Plan | Price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Starter | $0 with any device | 300 transcription minutes/mo, AI summaries — free indefinitely [SPEC] |
| Pro | $8.33/mo billed annually ($99.99/yr); $17.99/mo if paid monthly | 1,200 minutes/mo [SPEC] |
| Unlimited | $19.99/mo billed annually ($239.99/yr); $29.99/mo if paid monthly | Unlimited minutes, fair-use capped at 24 h/day [SPEC] |
| Team | $20/user/mo annual (launch price, rises to $25 after Nov 30, 2026); $28 monthly | Per-seat plans for organizations [SPEC] |
The device itself is where the real money is: the PLAUD Note Pro runs $189 at PLAUD’s store (a $288.99 bundle pairs it with a year of Pro; a limited Flow Edition is $179) [SPEC]. PLAUD also sells officially on Amazon — the Note Pro listing there carries Amazon’s Choice, 4.5★ across 3,531 ratings, and #1 Best Seller in digital voice recorders [SPEC].
When 300 minutes runs out
Three hundred minutes is five hours of recording a month. A person with four hour-long meetings a week records sixteen hours — they hit the wall by week two. A person capturing three 20-minute conversations a week records four hours and never pays anyone anything. The dividing line is volume, and it is knowable in advance: our transcription-minutes calculator turns your calendar into a tier recommendation, and the subscription cost calculator prices it over three years.
The monthly-billing trap
This is the number PLAUD’s checkout does not put side by side. Pro at $17.99/month comes to $215.88 a year — $115.89 more than the identical annual plan. Unlimited monthly ($29.99) totals $359.88 against $239.99 annual, a $119.89 penalty. Paying monthly only makes sense for a bounded experiment (one busy month, one trial period). Everyone else should treat annual as the real price — and the same arithmetic applies across the category; our full subscription comparison shows PLAUD’s monthly-vs-annual spread is among the steepest.
What free actually includes
Per PLAUD’s membership FAQ, the Starter tier is not a trial: it recurs monthly for the life of the device, includes AI summaries (not just raw transcription), and the device keeps recording as a recorder regardless of plan state — transcription and AI features are what tier-gates apply to [SPEC]. Speaker labels, exported transcripts, and summary quality beyond the basics are where Pro differences show up in practice; the exact free-tier feature boundary is best confirmed on PLAUD’s plan page before you buy, since the company adjusts it [SPEC]. If you cancel a paid plan, the account returns to Starter — the steps are in our cancellation guide.
If you would rather own than subscribe
The subscription-free path exists and we track it closely: devices like the HiDock P1 and iFLYTEK SR302 Pro put their value in hardware and local processing, and the new Comu Action Pro makes unlimited transcription part of its free tier — see our Action Pro review. The three-year total-cost lens (hardware + every subscription month) is the only honest way to compare them: our 3-year TCO study does that math across the category, and PLAUD’s numbers above feed it directly.
